St George scraped into the finals of the First Grade Limited-Overs Cup on the last over of the last game of the regular season.
Today the Dragons sit one win away from the grand final after upsetting hot favourite and defending champion Sydney University in Sunday’s quarter-finals.
Defending 191, the never-say-die Saints bowled the Students out for 136 to set up a semi-final showdown with Sydney.
The Tigers beat Northern District by three wickets after reeling in their target of 233 inside 34 overs.
Manly-Warringah will host Randwick Petersham in the other semi after both teams recorded contrasting victories in their respective quarters.
The Waratahs finished 156-run winners over Fairfield-Liverpool, with Jack Edwards’ fine 92 backed up by a five-wicket haul to paceman Ryan Hadley.
The Randy Petes did it a lot tougher in holding off Bankstown in a last-over thriller at Bankstown Oval.
After making 5-255 from their 50 overs, Randwick-Petersham restricted the Bulldogs to 7-251 to win by just four runs.
Meanwhile, despite not getting a result UTS North Sydney crept back into the Belvidere Cup top six as those around them fell on Saturday.
The Bears’ clash with Hawkesbury ended in a stalemate but the point from the draw was enough to lift them clear of top six rivals Bankstown, Randwick-Petersham, Eastern Suburbs, Gordon, St George and Wests.
With three rounds remaining, only two points separate sixth (Norths) from 12th (Wests).
It makes for a fascinating fight to the end, with only first-placed Sydney University guaranteed of a finals berth.
The Students were made to work all the way for first innings points against Randy Petes, losing seven wickets on the way to passing the home side’s modest 145 at Coogee Oval.
Sydney maintained second spot after rolling Saints for just 92 in reply to 7 (dec) 313.
Opening bowlers Nic Bills (5-41) and Jack Nisbet (5-32) took all 10 wickets between them.
Manly stay third after centuries to Jay Lenton (156 not out) and Sam Gainsford (100) helped them reach 304 against Wests.
In fading light with overs fast running out, the Waratahs bowled the Magpies out for 181.
Spinner Elliott Herd continued his excellent campaign, capturing 4-46 with paceman Ryan Hadley picking up three scalps.
There were centuries to Tyran Liddiard (Penrith), Matt Moran (Mosman) and Jordon Cox (Easts).
Lachlan Ford (Wests), Will Salzmann (Campbelltown-Camden) and Chad Soper (Northern District) all finished with five-wicket hauls.
